Updated information for families around ARFID

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and feeding difficulties continue to be a key focus area for Leeds Parent Carer Forum.

In 2025, we worked closely with families across Leeds to better understand their experiences. This included two workshops and a detailed survey, giving parents and carers the opportunity to share what is working, what is not, and where more support is needed.

Earlier this year, we brought together everything families told us into a formal report, which was shared with Leeds Integrated Care Board (ICB), Leeds Health and Care Partnership (LHCP) and the West Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (WYICB).

What has happened since?

We have now received a response from the West Yorkshire NHS Integrated Care Board, which recognises the challenges families are facing.

The response highlights that there is currently no specific commissioned service in Leeds for diagnosing and treating ARFID. It also acknowledges that ARFID is complex and that developing effective support pathways will take time, with input from a range of professionals and services.

Importantly, the ICB has confirmed that work is underway to:

  • Review and improve existing eating disorder pathways
  • Explore better early identification and support for families
  • Improve access to practical advice and strategies
  • Strengthen training for professionals working with children and young people

They also recognise the real impact that gaps in support are having on children and families and have committed to continuing this work and sharing updates.

Extra information and support for families

Alongside this response, a number of helpful resources have been shared for families to access.

These include:

These pages bring together advice, guidance and practical information for families, as well as for professionals supporting children and young people.

What happens next?

We know from families that support for ARFID in Leeds can feel inconsistent and difficult to access. This work is an important step in raising awareness and pushing for a better, more joined-up approach.

Leeds PCF will continue to share family experiences, work with partners across health and education, and advocate for clearer pathways. As this work develops, we will share updates, information and resources so families feel informed.
