We’ve received an update from the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Service about their work to reduce waiting times for ADHD medication – and we wanted to share the latest developments with our community.
The service is introducing several measures to help improve access and speed up the process for families, this includes:
Exploring Shared Care with GPs
They’re working with GP practices to trial a “shared care” approach. This means the mental health service would start young people on medication, and once they’re settled, their GP would take over the 6-month reviews. This would free up clinic appointments for others on the waiting list.
This approach is still in early stages and will depend on individual GP agreements. Families will be informed if this applies to their child’s care.
More Prescribers
The service has been able to recruit more prescribers – until at least the end of March 2025.
Pre-Appointment Calls
Families may be contacted before their first medication appointment to gather key information. This helps reduce the time needed in clinic and allows more young people to be seen.
What does this mean for families?
These changes are aimed at improving access to ADHD medication and reducing delays. We will continue to share updates as we receive them, and we encourage families to contact the service directly with any questions about their child’s care.
