Leeds PCF meet with Leeds Council regarding EHCPs

Leeds City Council have commissioned their Children and Families Scrutiny Board to take a look at the provision of Education, Health and Care Plans in Leeds with a view to understanding and seeking to improve the service residents receive when they believe that their child has Special Educational Needs that mainstream school support cannot meet.

EHCPs are a very emotive subject for many parent carers in Leeds and we have been talking to many of you about the issues that you have faced in relation to EHCPs.  We were very keen to get involved with the review and as a result last Thursday members of the Leeds Parent Carer Forum went to Leeds Civic Hall to speak to the Scrutiny Board to tell them about our struggles in obtaining and implementing suitable EHCPs.

The Scrutiny Board is made up of local councillors who listened to what we had to say and were very surprised to hear about the scale of the problems parent carers around the city have been experiencing. They wanted us to spread the word that they would like to help with any specific problems that you are experiencing in relation to EHCPs and don’t just want to be a last resort.  Click here to find your local councillor and their contact details.

The Scrutiny Board will be making recommendations to the Children and Family Directorate, taking our views into account, and we hope that they will be making some very positive changes going forward.

Keep checking back with us for updates on this review.
